Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD, as it?s commonly known, is a form of depression mostly attributed to the lack of available sunlight during the Fall and Winter months. Common symptoms of SAD include feelings of sadness, fatigue, lethargy, appetite for sweets or carbs, social withdraw, difficulty focusing and sleeping, reduced productivity and irritability.
Causes for SAD are still being researched to learn more, but findings show, along with heredity and an inadequate exposure to light sources, that the same movements of the sun that affect hibernation in some animals, can cause biochemical changes in your circadian rhythms (your internal clock). SAD is also partially attributed to fluctuations in the levels of the hormone melatonin and the chemical serotonin in the brain.
